Spotlight on: Schools of the Realms - Toserra Sorose Academy (Asgard)

There are many schools operating within the nine realms, not including the schools located on the human planes for human children. Wealthy families or families in larger towns may be able to start their children’s education as young as five within an educational institution, many prefer or are only able to educate their children by way of private tutors and governesses until the age of fourteen. There is no exact number of barnaskóli (Schools for children aged between five and thirteen) and in larger cities they may be separated between younger and older children. Some are unofficial gatherings meant to educate children, led by educated townspeople, while others are official institutions with fees, traditions and uniforms. For many, the first foray into formal education comes when they enter an Academy. It is expected that students entering education at the Academy level can read and write.

The first Academy to open its doors after the great war was Toserra Sorose Academy (Originally ‘The New World School’) in Nýr Ásgardr. The school is the largest currently in operation and accepts students of all races, unlike many other schools which specialise.

The four Great schools of the Nine Realms are Toserra Sorose Academy, Ehras Magna Were Skoli, Aquino Beccara Holy and Fae School and Rinsunid Cantera College of the Night. Other great school exist further abroad in the Extended Planes, such as Kahawaiola’a Ocean School in Wākea and Ni Sekai-Ryu in Takama-no-Hara.

Toserra Sorose Academy

Toserra Sorose Academy (Formerly The New World School) Is the oldest and largest school in the nine realms. Records indicate that the history of the school could predate Ragnarök. Toserra Sorose Academy is located in the town of Nýr Ásgardr, on the Idavoll Planes of Asgard. Instead of having a dedicated campus separate from the town, Nýr Ásgardr and the school have grown together, with the school intermingled throughout the town. School buildings such as the Stables, library, hospital, training grounds, farms, gardens and temple complex are also available for the use of the townspeople.

Toserra Sorose is the only school that offers learning streams to all races and welcomes Weres, Angels, Fairies, Sirens, Leprechauns, Sirens, Elves and Vampires.

Toserra Sorose Academy is closely tied to the Nýr Ásgardr Barnaskóli but accepts entrants from all across the Nine Realms.

History

Toserra Sorose Academy, while the oldest acknowledged school in the Nine Realms was the first school to open its doors since Ragnarök, has attempted to tie its history to Ásgardr Hall Skoli, a school that is thought to have operated in about the same area as Toserra Sorose now stands. Toserra Sorose, the first headmistress and teacher at the school was thought to have been a teacher at Ásgardr Hall Skoli prior to the Great War, as were the school’s original Battle Master, Henrik Birk Noren, but all records have since been lost.

School Origins

The school was founded in the tenth year of reformation as The New World School in the fledgling village of Nýr Ásgardr. The first twenty-six students to attend the school were from amongst the settlers’ children and many of them had attended unofficial lessons with Sorose, who would occupy the children while their parents worked farming the land and building the town, prior to her officially forming the school. The lessons were taught in the parlour of Sorosian Hall, the half-ruined castle which the town was built round. All the settlers lived within the hall until private residences were built. Sorose and her husband Tyren Nyberg, the settlement leader, were granted the continual use of the hall as their private residence and the hall would go on to be the main school building, still standing to this day and generally referred to as either Sorosian Hall or College Castle.

After Tyren’s death in the eighth year of reformation, during a building accident, Sorose began plans to turn the hall into a school, hoping to draw more people to the town. The school officially opened with permission from the newly formed Norns of Yggdrasil City. While many of the students had attended lessons with Sorose in the lead up to the school’s opening, Sorose also accepted ten additional children board at the school.

Development of the School

The school grew steadily which resulted in the first boarding students needing to move from Sorosian Hall into the first dedicated dormitories within the town of Nýr Ásgardr, Queenette Dormitory, which housed forty girls and Knightrich Dormitory which housed forty boys in the year 15. In the year 17, the number of fourth yar students wanting their own space increased to the point that Dorbe Manor, a residence for final year students was built. In the year 20, the main population of students were of Were origins and the school introduced the official Were Learning Stream, approved by the Council of Pack Leaders and supported by the building of a new, Were only student residence. Believing that the Weres were getting special treatment, the Angelic Assembly Elvan Parliament, Siren Circle and The Coven provided funds not only for the building of specific student residences, but also for the development of dedicated learning streams. The Fae Court, The Pot of Luck and a unidentified group, thought to be of Godly origins also stepped forward to do the same. This resulted at the time in the construction of Ainsli Hall (Leprechaun), Holnelly Hall (Siren), Limomoux Heights (Fairy), Nollet House (Angel), Timbergard Hall (Were), Uchechi Cottage (Demi-God), Vitillon Hall (Vampire), and Yeatwens House (Elvan). These rapid building works or building acquisitions allowed for a rapid expansion of the school and once they were completed, students no longer resided within Sorosian Hall. The Elvan Learning Stream was introduced at the same time as Yeatwens House being opened. The Vampire stream was also started, allowing for greater allowances for the specific needs of Vampire students.

Despite an outstanding reputation throughout the nine realms, the school’s population declined in the years following the opening of Rinsunid Canterra College of the Night in Svartalheim in the year 34. The College’s dedication to Were and Vampire education resulted in many Were and Vampire families deciding to send their children to Rinsunid instead of all the way to The New World School.

Were enrolments dropped further upon the opening of Ehras Magna Were Skoli in Muspelheim in the year 55. Were enrolments dropped to almost none, excepting families that were residing close to Nýr Ásgardr. The New World School countered by appealing to Siren, Fae, Leprechaun and Angel kinds, finalising the development of the learning streams for these races.

The decision to radically develop the additional learning streams had negative effects on schools such as Vivace Music School and Scoil an Ádh, but it is possible that with better management, these schools might have seen their way through these times.

Unhappy with the condition that his children must board with other students, a wealthy nobleman of The Fae Court, Bodnia Simonsen, who was supporting the development of the Faerie Learning Stream also gifted the school two small apartments, making them officially student residences, but small enough that only his children and their select friends could be assigned there. To his day, The Estievillers (Girls) and The Xayvion (Boys) are still highly sought after appointments and it is believed that being chosen into one of these houses can determine a student’s future in high society.

In the year 63, Headmistress Sorose stepped down from her role, but continued to guide the school until her death in the year 69. Sorose’s guidance and her clear vision for the school allowed for a smooth transition to the second headmaster, former teacher, Brannagh Malstrom, who went about trying to make the school attractive once more to Were Communities, initiating the Were Games (a pre-cursor to the current Interschool Games) between The New World School, Rinsunid Cantera and Ehras Magna. A chance to prove pack superiority saw several Packs choose allegiance with The New World School, to allow their sons and daughters to fight for pack honour. To further garner favour within the Were communities, Headmaster Malstrom commissioned the acquisition of four new student residences, Bridelow Cottage (Werewolf), Glairnet Hall (Weretiger), Ouwste House (Werebear) and Pouinie Cottage (Werehyena) one for each of the major Were races.

By the year 80, The New World School accepted all students of all races with dedicated Learning Streams. In addition to this, it was becoming evident that some Elves showed an aptitude for Fae Arcana and a secondary Elvan Learning stream was established to cater to magically gifted students. In this time, the first Were headmaster, Meyjes Fairbank was selected when Brannagh Malstrom stepped down. By the year 100 though, hostilities within the Elvan Ljósálfar and Dökkálfar communities were coming to a head and several prominent families threatened to remove their children if the remaining Dökkálfar children were not removed from the school, as well as several Dökkálfar staff members. Unwilling to comply and deprive the Dökkálfar children of their education Meyjes Fairbank stepped down from his role as headmaster. Instead, he took the Dökkálfar children and staff who were facing considerable personal harm at the time to Svartalheim, finding them a place at Rinsunid Cantera College of the Night.

A new Ljósálfar headmistress, Shea Finnian took control of the school, renaming the Elvan Learning Streams to ‘Ljósálfar’ Learning Streams and eradicating Dökkálfar history from the course curriculum. Among her more popular action though, were the addition of the School Games, events that all students could compete in. While the Were Games were the only events that were competed against with other schools, the School Games proved successful and the town of Nýr Ásgardr and the students at the school all enjoyed the games. Shea Finnian’s other big change was to rename the school to Toserra Sorose Academy after the first headmistress.

The first interschool games were between Toserra Sorose Academy and the newly formed Aquino Beccara Holy and Fae School. Rinsunid Cantera College of the Night requested entry into the school games on behalf of their non-Were students, but it became evident that the Were students wanted to also compete in the standard games. Several smaller schools joined in the games as well, creating a friendly rivalry between the staff, students, and towns where the schools were situated. Ehras Magna Were Skoli was the last of the great schools to join the School Games, preferring the tradition of the Were Games. Shortly after this, The Were Games were phased out as a separate event and integrated into the School Games.

Shea Finnian ran the school until year 146, when she was thought killed during un uprising of Dökkálfar slaves during a personal holiday away from Nýr Ásgardr. The role was taken up by the Deputy Headmaster at the time, Ciaran Lavery, an angel, who oversaw the construction of the Temple Complex and the town Healing House, followed by the establishment of the school gardens, to be maintained by the students. The popularity of the School Games also saw the school contribute to the construction of a stadium and fairgrounds for the town.

Ciaran Lavery was officially sworn in as the headmaster of Toserra Sorose Academy, some ten years after Shea Finnian’s disappearance.

The current headmaster of Toserra Sorose Academy is Hadar Gotts. Serval controversial acts of his, include the admission of a Dökkálfar family, the admission of Wererabbits and the admission of a Valkyrie to the school.

Student Houses

As all students at Toserra Sorose Academy board, regardless of where they come from, the school has twenty-six student residences of varying sizes scarred throughout the town of Nýr Ásgardr. The student houses are all named after the first class of students to graduate from the school. All residences have a house crest. The crest is granted to each resident in the form of a pin, which is a mandatory part of their school uniform.

House Prefects are fourth year students allocated to each house regardless of the year level the house is designated for. There are two stages to becoming a House Prefect, including superior grades and a meticulous adherence to the school rules, but after a shortlist of appropriate fourth year students is compiled, a ceremony similar to that of the first year Choosings takes place. Fourth year houses also have an assigned Prefect.

In the case of the Were Houses, the prefect of those houses is also the defacto alpha of their respective packs for the year and can make decisions for all Weres under their purview, not just those who reside within their house. The Prefect of Timbergard House is the defacto leader of the Were community at Toserra Sorose, filling a role of Alpha of the Pack Leader Council. Many Were prefects have gone on to be Pack Leaders and serving on the Council of Pack Leaders after they leave school
